"Miley Cyrus Whitesplains Race to Nicki Minaj and Misses the Point Entirely"

"You can denounce racism, black people—but do it nicely.
Cyrus then went on to take an even more personal direct jab at Minaj.
“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite,” Cyrus said. “I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you’ve just given E! News ‘Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It.’”

Despite the way that Miley is choosing to frame the fracas, it was Swift who initially reacted in a way that deflected the larger issue and made the situation about she and Minaj—she acknowledged as much when she apologized to Nicki...

Cyrus’s thought process is indicative of the left-leaning millennial racism; the “I get it, but…” racism. A white pop star who accessorizes blackness shouldn’t be so quick to tell a black artist how they should talk about racism. Maybe Miley Cyrus has heard the criticism, but she definitely hasn’t listened to it. "

It's so real. It's said so, so often but a POC isn't expected to call out racism, they are expected to be in spaces in order to validate their non-racism-ness. So when we do point out racism, we have to do it in a sneaky way so that everyone feels even more loved by us than they did before (fun fact: this isn't realistic) or else everyone else is allowed to be angry and claim that we are the ones introducing negativity.

Like, I cannot tell you how many white people have told me that I can tell them anything, and then still get super defensive when I tell them a watered-down version of something to do with race (that might not even be about interpersonal racism! It might be that I am frustrated by trying to find a place that can cut my hair).

Life is exhausting.

"The clap back was hilarious, yes, but there is a reason Black people are celebrating it; because Nicki showed some serious courage. Black people, Black women especially, are expected to shoulder any and all abuse silently. She refused. At the end of the day, to these people, she is just a Black woman who is supposed to shut up and take whatever bullshit gets thrown at her. She isn’t supposed to defend herself, especially not if it means hurting white people’s feelings. Protect Nicki Minaj at all fucking costs. Support her at all costs, because she’s going to come under serious fire."
